They've recently upgraded their menu. The service was great, our waiter was funny and kind. Their new menu didn't include descriptions of what was in the rolls, but our waiter was able to recite and answer all of our questions for almost every roll Great family oriented Japanese restaurant!

What an interesting concept! We got their specialty, which is steamed food over cypress wood. It was cool to see how it cooked. We got both the vegetable and meat/seafood combos. There's a lot of food, and we had a hard time finishing it between the 2 of us. The shrimp was a miss (I think they cooked a bit too long), but everything else was excellent. You felt like you were eating healthily too, which was nice. The restaurant has been various establishments before, but they didn't need to do much to it. Good service as well. Waiter was great to explain what the concept was. Comfortable place, not too crowded when we went for a weeknight dinner.

Monotony has been a common theme in Japanese restaurants lately in the Bay, fortunately, Mao Izakaya/sushi puts a fusion spin that you literally can taste. From the appetizers, to the rolls, to the meats, to the ramen noodles... everything is intentionally placed and placed together for a harmonious balance of the palate. Other sushi/Izakaya spots tend to douse teriyaki and overly sweeter the rolls, this one is... My new goto spot.

Been here a couple of times in the past month and this place is consistently great! The edamame with garlic butter to start is so fresh and flavorful. The yakitori is perfectly grilled and flavorful - love the chicken thigh, bacon & tomato, prime beef, beef tongue! The first time I visited, we tried the seiro mushi box as we've never tried before - we got the meat and seafood - and it comes in box and it cooks by steaming at the table - it was alot of food and good quality but the way it is cooked is very healthy and lacked any flavor for my taste. But my experience with all the other food above plus the sushi completely makes up for it. This place is my new favorite for sushi - I just love the super shrimp crunch roll. I feel like I could have two rolls!! They also have yakiniku that I have yet to try and plan to come back real soon to have it and will update my review!
